DutiesSeeking volunteers to assist in the clearing of walkways of snow during the winter months for seniors and persons with disabilities as part of the 'Snow Angels' program. See Volunteer Hamilton/Snow Angels web site. Snow Angel volunteers will generally be assigned addresses within their own neighborhood and within walking distance of their own home.

The Snow Angels program is activated by 'snow emergency' events as announced in local media and defined in the snow angel training process. They can occur at most anytime during the winter months. Generally, snow angel volunteers clear snow from their assigned walkways within 24 hours of the END of a major snowfall.

Volunteers will work at the location of the senior or person with disability who needs assistance with snow removal. As much as possible, volunteer Snow Angels will be matched with service recipients geographically close to their own home location. There is no direct personal contact between the Snow Angel volunteer and the person receiving the snow clearing service.

TransportationVolunteer will provide own transportation to and from the location where snow is to be cleared.Ideally, most assignments will be within easy walking distance of the volunteer's home.
Interaction LevelSolitary ; Small Group ; Solitary and sometimes in small groups. This activity could be suitable for 'family volunteering' or for a small group of friends.

Skills/ExperienceThis activity can be physically challenging and is best suited to volunteers with a moderate to high fitness level and free of specific medical or health concerns. It may not be well suited for smokers for example or persons with breathing difficulties or heart or back problems.
Additional RequirementsTwo personal references, volunteers under the age of 16 will require parental consent and need to work in a 'buddy' system, seniors should consult with their doctor about appropriate fitness level required for this activity. Ability to shovel snow is essential. Reliability is very important.
