| Description | The mission of the program is to encourage, enable and empower the voice and participation of consumer/survivors in the mental health system in the Hamilton area. Members and visitors are welcome to drop in to access the library/resource material, to socialize with other consumers in a friendly, accepting and respectful atmosphere. Activities include weekly movies, crafts, volunteer opportunities and occasional bus trips or seasonal parties. MHRC runs public education workshops, participates in research projects, and represents the interests of consumers on many local mental health networks, boards and steering committees. Peer support is available by phone or in person during the drop-in hours. A peer support training course is offered to consumers who wish to help others. The Voices of Experience program provides: * A 5 week training course to interested participants * Increase the level of consumer participation in decision-making roles in mental health & addictions services * Recruit and match consumers to committee and board positions within the mental health and addictions sector * Assist agencies in orienting, welcoming, and utilizing consumer volunteers * $15 honorarium offered for each meeting attended (training excluded) The Rights Stuff is a bi-monthly newsletter to inform members of activities and focuses on a variety of issues relevant to mental health consumers in Hamilton and Ontario. The newsletter is mailed to consumer members and e-mailed in groups to non consumer members and mental health agencies. | |||
