DescriptionThe Commission administers the Canadian Human Rights Act. 
 
The role of the Commission is to: 
 
* Investigate complaints of discrimination  
* Foster public understanding of human rights  
* Carry out research on human rights  
* Keep in touch with provincial human rights commissions to avoid problems of overlapping jurisdictions  
* Advise Parliament on human rights issues 
* Consider suggestions people make to it concerning human rights 
* Uses publicity and education to keep discrimination from happening 
 
Commission members meet about 10 times a year to review cases, set policies. Day to day, the Commission's work is carried out by a staff of about 200 directed by the Chief Commissioner. 
 
The Act lists 11 specific grounds on which discrimination is forbidden: 
 
* Race  
* National or ethnic origin  
* Colour  
* Religion  
* Age  
* Sex (pregnancy and child birth) 
* Marital status  
* Family status  
* Pardoned conviction  
* Disability (mental or physical, previous or present drug or alcohol dependence) 
* Sexual orientation 
 
The Act provides that discrimination based on pregnancy or childbirth is sex discrimination. Disability means any previous or existing mental or physical disability and includes disfigurement and dependence on alcohol or a drug.
