Description & Services
DescriptionThe Major Fraud Branch and Divisional CID Detectives will handle criminal matters related to fraud, forgery, counterfeit money, credit & debit card fraud, corporate fraud, fraudulent telemarketing and suspicious business practices including theft by Power of Attorney matters. Fraud-related incidents must be reported to the HPS at a police division or via phone to the Call Management Branch at 905-546-4514.

Support for Abused Senior:
Many issues can be resolved over the telephone, but all shut-ins receive a home visit regardless of the degree of
complexity of the issue at hand. The focus of intervention is on fraudulent use of finances (i.e. - telemarketing, renovation fraud). However, protocols are currently being developed regarding: abuse of financial power of attorney. If a senior is not competent, the officer will work closely with the person holding Power of Attorney (assuming P. O A. is not the perpetrator!)

Intervention with Alleged Abuser:
The officer will investigate the allegations, and then try to have the fraudulent individual(s) convicted. If conviction is not possible, the officer may attempt to have business license revoked, or have perpetrator voluntarily repay the victim. He/she will make connection with Project Phonebusters if the perpetrator is outside of Hamilton-Wentworth jurisdiction.
In cases of fraud there is usually enough external evidence to take perpetrators to court; thus, even when the victim is not a
credible witness due to non-competence, the case against the perpetrator can move forward.
