DescriptionThe museum preserves, studies, and presents the rural heritage of the Sheffield area through the collection or visual material, oral and written history, and artifacts. 
 
School Programs are as follows: 
 
Traditional Canadian Music and Dance 
Gr. 2 Social Studies 
Students learn about traditional musical instruments and dancing brought to Canada by early immigrants from the British Isles. The fiddle, bagpipes, whistle, and accordion are demonstrated and the students participate in simple folk dancing.  
 
Meet The Pioneer Farmer 
Gr. 3 Social Studies 
Invite a real, live, pioneer farmer into your classroom to talk to your students about life as a settler. Students are encouraged to ask this "first-person", costumed character questions. The pioneer will show them some of his farm tools, and teach them a barn dance.  
 
Pioneer Music and Dance 
Gr. 3 Social Studies 
Students learn from a "real" pioneer character about the traditional musical instruments and dancing brought to Canada by immigrants from the British Isles. The fiddle, bagpipes, whistle, and accordion are demonstrated and the students participate in simple folk dancing.  
 
Images of a Rural Ontario Community in the Past  
Gr. 3 Social Studies Urban & Rural Communities 
Using slides and video selected from the museum's extensive collection of historic photographs and movie film, students learn about farm life, village industries, transportation, recreation, fashion, architecture, and special events as they underwent great changes in the fairly typical rural community of Sheffield Ontario between 1900-1950.  
 
Popular Music and Dance in Medieval Times 
Gr. 4 Social Studies 
Students learn from a "real" peasant character about the music and dance that was popular amongst the medieval peasantry. The fiddle, bagpipes, whistle, and drum are demonstrated, and the students learn simple dances from Medieval times, danced to live music.  
 
Meet The Medieval Peasant 
Gr. 4 Social Studies 
Invite a real, live, Peasant into your classroom to talk to your students about how 90% of the Medieval population lived. Students are encouraged to ask this "first-person", costumed character questions. The Peasant will show them some of his farm tools, and teach them a Medieval dance with live music on the bagpipes.  
 
Meet The Loyalist Farmer 
Gr. 7 History 
Invite a real, live, Loyalist farmer into your classroom to talk to your students about life as an early Upper Canadian settler. Students are encouraged to ask this "first-person", costumed character questions. The Loyalist will show them some of his farm tools, and teach them a barn dance.  
 
Folk Dancing 
Physical Education (all Grades) 
Students are taught simple folk dances from the British Isles, and then dance them to live traditional folk music. (May also include a brief demonstration of the fiddle and bagpipes.) The folk dances are great exercise and an enjoyable form of "Active Participation" and "Fundamental Movement Skills", ie "Locomotion/Travelling".  
 
 
Booking Details 
 
Sheffield Museum school programs (brought into your school) may usually be booked for any weekday except Tuesdays. 
 
Extra Supervision for Dancing  
In order for folk dancing to be successfully learned and enjoyed, the students are broken into groups of about 10. In most cases, a responsible supervisor (teacher, parent, etc.) is needed to assist each group.
